Vote Yes to Proposition 2 to Help Farm Animals

Wayne Parcell from the Humane Society of the U.S. will be on The Ellen DeGeneres show September 26th, (U.S.) to spread the word about Proposition 2 – an anti-cruelty measure that will end inhumane confinement of 20 million farm animals that suffer in tiny cages and crates their entire lives. You can only vote if you live in California, however, if you live elsewhere, you can still learn about this and get the word out to friends and family.

See here for airtime in your area. Ellen will feature this animation on the show as well.

HSUS Recues 1,000 Dogs From Puppy Mill

It’s hard to imagine that this kind of thing happens almost everyday. The Humane Society rescues many animals throughout the year but it’s wonderful to see these stories making it into mainstream news.

Reported by the L.A. Times on 8/25/2008, HSUS rescued from a West Virginia puppy mill over the weekend, prompting a national effort by animal groups to find them new homes. The puppy mill is called The Whispering Oaks Kennel which sounds so peaceful and comforting, but it’s anything but. Rescue workers found many of these dogs and puppies emaciated, frightened, and ill. Puppies were found uncared for. Luckily, 1,000 of these got rescued and now they are waiting for homes!

Cats Round-up at JFK Airport – Help Now

photo from HSUS site
JFK Airport in New York City are rounding up 300-500 cats and kittens who live in or nearby for euthanasia, despite humane organizations such as the Humane Society of US’s protest and offer of assistance for humane intervention (Trap-Neuter-Return /TNR program). Though airport employees and animals rescues tended to the cats, the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey are planning to move forward with the plan. These cats are believed to be mostly lost companion animals by travelers over decades that somehow survived and continue to breed and dwell around the airport.

The problem of growing cats around the premise could simply be helped by the TNR program. They are not in the way of air and ground traffic so there is simply no need for extermination. Please make a brief, polite phone call to Governor Jon Corzine at 609-292-6000. You will likely speak to a staff member– tell them that this is not necessary and the program is a proven strategy to control this situation. Thank you.

Animals in Disasters

Animal cruelty is by far not the only horrible thing that happens to animals of the world, natural disasters claim many of them as well. Hurricanes, tornadoes, avalanches, fires, and floods not only affect humans in terrible ways, but in some ways even more horrible for animals, as they are helpless in these situations. They can only cry for help, but they are never first to BE helped, as people’s lives take precedence over theirs. Stranded, abandoned, and left for dead, as so evident in Hurricane Katrina, these poor animals, including dogs and cats like yours and mine, can only wait. Terrified, injured, and starved, they try to survive.

That is why organizations like the Humane Society, PETA, IFAW, ASPCA among thousand others are so important. Their focus is to save as many as possible, revive them, care for them and find them homes and reunite them with the owners. I find this incredibly heroic and touching. I think compassion is every person’s gift. For those who of us who can’t join them in rescue, we can certainly donate money to these organizations so they could continue the work of perpetuating the lives of our animal friends. MAKE A DONATION TODAY.

Sharks Awareness Cartoon by Jim Toomey

Artist Jim Toomey illustrates cartoon strip highlighting sharks’ vulnerability in our oceans. A great series is being showcased on Humane Society of the United States‘ website.

Sharks of all kinds all over the world are at great risk of extinction. Overfishing, poaching by Asian countries have reduced their numbers in the thousands. Caught in fishing nets, sharks drown since they are unable to move through water over their gills. Captured and killed for ONLY their fins, which is believed by some to have healing effects, most sharks are often thrown back into the oceans after their fins are cut off, then they drown and bleed to death in the water, leaving corpses everywhere. They are magnificent predators that keep the balance of ocean life in check and they are “vital part of nature”. Write to the National Marine Fisheries Service at 1315 East-West Hwy, Silver Spring, MD 20910.
Check out the wonderful cartoon strips here.. You can’t also print out the cartoon image above and mail it easily!
